The 2S9 Nona is a Soviet Mortar Carrier that first appears in Wargame: AirLand Battle.
History[]
The 2S9 wields a 120mm gun-mortar mounted the chassis of a BTR-D.
BTR-D being designated with airborne groups, and saw its first use in the Soviet-Afghan War. 1,000 estimated were built. These were used in airborne formations down to air assault brigade's BMD battalion mortar battery.
Overview[]
Despite its chassis is based on BTR-D, the Front and Side Armor of 2S9 Nona is the lower 1, while the Top Armor is still 1 and provided some survivability.
The artillery performance of 2S9 Nona is quite similar with 2S23 Nona-SVK, except the Dispersion is worse than even 82mm mortars (e.g. MT-LB Vasilek), as well as low-angle HEAT shots Accuracy. On other aspects, 2S9 has lower Front Armor and (all three types of) Speed, also lacks a MMG.
Although the HE Power of 5 is quite impressive, its firing rate is less than half that of the 82mm mortars, the reserve ammunition is limited too. Nona needs 8 seconds to aim and 4 seconds to reload one shot (twice than 82mm mortars); Its salvo length is 3.
It should be noticed that the coverage range of 120mm smoke rounds is larger than 82mm ones.
