9K33 Osa | 9K33 Osa-AK | 9K33 Osa-AKM |
The 9K33 Osa-AKM is an anti-aircraft missile for the Soviet Union, it is an upgrade for the 9K33 Osa and the Osa-AKM and was first introduced in Wargame: European Escalation
History[]
The Osa-AKM was the ultimate evolution of the 9K33 system. Further development of this surface-to-air missile complex was spurred in part by the employment of TOW-armed AH-1 Cobras in the Vietnam War, prompting designers to further improve the system's low altitude and anti-helicopter performance with a new proximity warhead. On the other hand, the improved 9M33M3 missiles offered greater range and altitude. Additionally, the radar system was improved and an IFF antenna was fitted.
Overview[]
European Escalation[]
Although the accuracy of the Osa-AKM is further improved from the baseline, it is still unacceptably low. While the impressive three kilometer range will allow the system to engage most enemy helicopters from beyond the range of their ATGMs, the Osa-AKM will still likely run out of missiles before downing an enemy unless it is in the company of a supply truck or FOB.
AirLand Battle[]
In Wargame: AirLand Battle, the Osa-AKM further extends on the range of its predecessor, and offers a slight increase in damage. With a 3150 m reach against aircraft, the Osa-AKM may be contemplated as an alternative to the Kub or Buk missiles for area-wide air defense. Care should be taken, however, to micromanage the radar in the presence of SEAD, and to relocate whenever possible after engagements, as the higher cost and lower availability of the Osa-AKM makes it less expendable than prior systems.
Entering service in 1980, the Osa-AKM is available in Category B decks, offering an effective air defense option in greater numbers for players who opt for a mid-technology army.
Red Dragon[]
In Wargame: Red Dragon, the Osa-AKM has seen some improvement in its range against aircraft and helicopter, but now comes at a significantly increased cost. While still a capable system, at 75 points, the Osa-AKM suffers in comparison to the 9K330 Tor, which has a longer range and greater ammunition capacity for only 5 points more. The Czechoslovakian Osa-AKM, and the identical 9K33M3 Romb, however, remain important parts of East European decks.
Unlike similar BLUFOR Roland systems, the OSA-AKM is amphibious, allowing it to be deployed across bodies of water or onto isolated islands.
