The A-4M Skyhawk II is a ground attack aircraft for the United States that made it's first appearance in Wargame: AirLand BattleIt is only available for Marine and non type-specific decks.

History[]

The Douglas A-4M is an improved version of the A-4 Skyhawk; one of the series to be called "Skyhawk II." It carries the square-topped tail of the A-4H, a relocated breaking parachute, significantly enhanced avionics, and a considerably more powerful engine than prior A-4 variants: the J52-P-408A, which generates more than 11,200 pounds of installed thrust. Additional upgrades included ECM, 160 A-4Ms were built.

A-4M were used by US Marine Attack squadrons being replaced by Harriers starting in mid-1980s with the last OA-4M leaving service in 1994.

Overview[]

AirLand Battle[]

The A-4M, like the A-4F, is an inexpensive close air support (CAS) aircraft for NATO decks, which carries two Colt Mk. 12 cannons, and 127mm Zuni rockets. The chief difference between the A-4M and A-4F is that the A-4M carries sixteen Zunis, compared to the A-4F's eight. It has no ECM, no AAM compliment, and is not particularly fast, topping out at 600km/h, leaving it vulnerable to both enemy fighters and anti-aircraft artillery. The A-4M's rockets make the plane an effective CAS platform, especially against lightly armored vehicles and infantry. At 10 points more per plane than the A-4F, the A-4M is highly effective for its cost. It can use its two Colt Mk. 12 cannons to attack helicopters, and for a small level of protection against enemy fighters.

Red Dragon[]

The A-4M Skyhawk II is nearly unchanged in Wargame: Red Dragon. It carries the same loadout of two Colt Mk. 12 cannons and sixteen 127mm Zuni rockets. The Zuni rockets are slightly less powerful in Red Dragon than in AirLand Battle (HE power 4 versus 5). The biggest difference between the RD and ALB variants of the A-4M is the inclusion of ECM for Red Dragon. Although it is not particularly strong (20%), it is an improvement over no ECM and helps the aircraft's survivability if it is engaged at long range. The A-4M is also slightly more expensive to field, at 60 points per aircraft.
