The United States Marine Corps was interested in the AH-1 Cobra but wanted a twin-engine variant for over water operations and a better turreted weapon.
First AH-1J took flight in November 1969. The major features of the AH-1J were Pratt & Whitney Canada (P&WC) T400-CP-400 Twin Pac engine system and its GE M197 20 millimeter cannon mounted in a "universal turret".
Like earlier Cobra variants the AH-1J does not have TOW capability.
These were used in the HMLA squadrons being replaced by AH-1W starting in 1986.
