AH-1S is a Japanese Attack Helicopter that appears in Wargame: Red Dragon.

History[]

Two AH-1E were purchased in 1977 and 1978. Licenced production started by Fuji Heavy Industries with 90 made. These were used by the anti-tank helicopter squadrons.

Overview[]

The AH-1S is one of two helicopters under the HEL tab available to Japan. It is Japan's only gunship, the other helicopter available to Japan being the OH-6D TOW carrier. Like most Cobras, the AH-1S is a small, fast vehicle that is armed with three sets of weapons -- two rocket pods, eight I-TOW missiles, and a nose-mounted M197 vulcan. This makes it a fairly good multi-role helicopter, capable of providing escort for transport helicopters, intercepting ground-based pushes, or as a rapid-response force.

The rocket pods can make short work of most infantry at a safe distance. Its I-TOW missiles, while not as effective as South Korea's AH-1T's TOW 2 missiles, can still deal significant damage to enemy vehicles. Additionally, the vulcan is a very potent weapon capable of cutting down infantry and vehicles alike, but requires the helicopter to close to a very short distance -- which makes it very vulnerable to any anti-air weaponry. Like all helicopters, it is highly susceptible to infantry gunfire, increasing the risk of it being shot down if it is moved into vulcan range.
