The AH-64D Apache Longbow is a recon variant of the American attack helicopter AH-64 Apache that appears in Wargame: Red Dragon.

History[]

The McDonnell Douglas AH-64D Apache Longbow is a two-seat, four-blade, twin-turboshaft attack helicopter designed for the US Army. The AH-64D is an advanced variant of the AH-64 attack helicopter, which features a glass cockpit, the AN/APG-78 Longbow millimeter-wave fire control radar, data link and up-rated GE T700 engines. The Longbow radar has the ability to track up to 128 targets, and allow the crew to engage up to 16 with Hellfire missiles. The first production model AH-64D was delivered to the US Army in 1997.

Overview[]

The AH-64D is a prototype reconnaissance/attack helicopter available to US and NORAD decks in Wargame: Red Dragon. The type features exceptional optics, 16 AGM-114C Hellfire missiles, and a 30mm cannon. It is ideal both for reconnaissance and anti-tank duties. The AGM-114C's AP of 26 can defeat even the front armor of top-of-the-line REDFOR tanks, and the AH-64D fires two missiles at a time. This usually ensures that at least one missile will hit its target, and if both hit, it's usually enough to kill most medium-end tanks, and superheavies will be severely damaged.

The AGM-114C is fire and forget, thus even if the longbow is destroyed or out of line of sight the missile will still fly towards the target as if a constant LOS was maintained. This allows the longbow to kill even AA pieces with proper micro-management. Like banking to the side while passing the longbow into the AA's LOS just long enough to fire a missile at the AA, then disappear out of sight and let the missile fly to the AA alone. This strategy is viable against all AA below 8 HE. The longbow would be damaged should the missile hit, but not destroyed unless there's a critical hit, while the AA would be killed.

It can be also paired up with the AH-1W Supercobra, the former can suppress enemy radar AA while the longbow hunts tanks.

The main draw-backs are the price, at 150 and with only 2 available, it's very profitable to exchange a cheap plane to kill it. Thus it's a good idea to invest in a Patriot to stun enemy planes before they can hit the longbow and possibly killing it. In addition, the hellfire is very expensive to resupply, so proper micro-management is required to not waste missiles on cheap targets such as APCs and trucks.
