The AMX-30 Roland is a French anti-aircraft vehicle. It is the combination of the Roland missile system and the chassis of the AMX-30.
Overview[]
The Roland is pretty much the AA work horse for the French army, with good HE, respectable armor for an AA piece, and high accuracy, while being average priced. The drawbacks of the Roland would be its shorter range compared to other SAMs, meaning it needs to be closer to the front to in order to cover your forward troops, this in turn makes it prone to rushes by ground forces eager to take it out or a spread group of Choppers going in for a quick strike. All in all though, it is worth its price tag thanks to its deadly combination of firepower and accuracy.
Tips[]
- The AMX-30 Roland's HE 4 means that at least 3 hits will be needed to take down the average PACT helicopter, and 2 for the lowest ones
- Cause of its shorter range make sure to keep Rolands in small scattered groups to prevent stunning from a rocket barrage or well timed arty strike
History[]
The Roland is a mobile short-range surface to air missile, who was developed jointly by French and German in 1963 to defend concentration of troops or positions. France mounted their Rolands on a AMX-30 which replaced towed 40mm Borfors starting in 1964. These were used in the Army Corps level Air Defense Regiments. Last Roland battery ended service in 2008
This is one of the only missiles purchased by the USA built in another country.
