AV-8A Harrier | AV-8C Harrier | AV-8B Harrier II |
The American McDonnell Douglas AV-8B Harrier II is a multirole combat aircraft introduced in Wargame: AirLand Battle.
History[]
The McDonnell Douglas (now Boeing) AV-8B Harrier II is a second-generation single engine, single seat, Vertical/Short Takeoff and Landing (V/STOL) multirole-combat aircraft. An Anglo-American development of the British Hawker Siddeley Harrier, the Harrier II is the final member of the Harrier family that started with the Hawker Siddeley P.1127 in the early 1960s. AV-8B has redesigned composite wing with a additional hardpoint along with additional structural and aerodynamic upgrades.
The AV-8B is primarily used for light attack or multi-role missions, and is typically operated from small aircraft carriers, large amphibious assault ships and simple forward operating bases. A variant of the AV-8B, the British Aerospace Harrier II was developed for the British military. The TAV-8B is a dedicated two-seat trainer version. The Harrier II and other models of the Harrier family have been called "Jump Jets".
AV-8B Harrier II replaced AV-8C in USMC VMA squadrons and now replaced by F-35B.
Overview[]
AirLand Battle[]
The AV-8B Harrier II is a more advanced variant of the AV-8 series available to American and NATO decks. It carries a 25mm GAU-12 Equalizer with superior fire rate compared to the ADEN 30, a pair of highly accurate, powerful Semi-Active Laser-Homing AGM-65E Maverick missiles, and the AIM-9M Sidewinder air to air missile. It features improved ECM (Medium) compared to the AV-8C, and is an excellent choice for spot removal of high value vehicles or top of the line tanks. It can attack enemy helicopters operating in its area with the AIM-9M and GAU-12. The major drawbacks of the AV-8B are its high cost, moderate ECM and lack of a long range AAM. While its ECM is improved, it is not very good for a 120 point airframe, and the AIM-9M makes the aircraft deadly in close range, but do not provide the Harrier II with a long range punch.
Red Dragon[]
The AV-8B Harrier II in Wargame: Red Dragon is a 120-point multirole combat aircraft available to American and NATO decks. It carries the same loadout as in AirLand Battle, but slightly improved ECM (30%), and the fire rate of the GAU-12 has been doubled, but its range slightly decreased against ground targets. Its advantages and disadvantages are largely the same in Red Dragon as AirLand battle.
