The AV-8C Harrier is one of the many multirole combat aircraft that are available to the United States in Wargame: AirLand Battle and Wargame: Red Dragon.

History[]

The Hawker Siddeley AV-8C Harrier is an upgrade to the baseline AV-8A Harrier Vertical/Short Takeoff and Landing (V/STOL) aircraft. It is a single engine, single seat, subsonic V/STOL multirole combat aircraft. The AV-8C saw the installation of an ECM system, new inertial navigation system, changes to the Lift Improvement Devices, and airframe improvements to increase service life.

47 AV-8A were converted to AV-8C in 1987. These Harriers served as a intern vehicle before AV-8B entered service.

Overview[]

AirLand Battle[]

The AV-8C is a slightly improved variant of the AV-8A, costing 15 points more per aircraft (70 points). ECM of poor strength has been installed ("Bad" rated), the rocket compliment has been doubled to 38 from 19, and the aircraft carries the improved AIM-9L Sidewinder. Its ADEN cannons are unchanged. As with the AV-8A, the AV-8C is a light strike aircraft which can also attack helicopters operating in its area, but with more rockets to cause more damage against lightly armored columns. The AIM-9L makes the Harrier more deadly at close range, however, the type is still highly vulnerable to long range SAMs and AAMs.

Red Dragon[]

The AV-8C in Wargame: Red Dragon is slightly improved from its AirLand Battle configuration. Its ECM has received a bump up to 20%; not significantly powerful, but better than in ALB. The AV-8C is slightly faster than in ALB, and it still carries 38 Hydra rockets, two AIM-9L Sidewinders and twin ADEN 30 autocannons. The type costs 10 more points per aircraft (80 points) than in ALB. Its advantages and disadvantages are largely the same.
