The Alpha Jet A is a West German ground attack aircraft that first appeared in Wargame: AirLand Battle.

History[]

The Dassault/Dornier Alpha Jet is a twin-engine, two-seat light attack aircraft co-manufactured by Dassault of France and Dornier of Germany. The push to develop the Alpha Jet was started in the late 1960's to develop an advanced trainer along the lines of the Lockheed T-33. After an initial collaboration between France and England which resulted in the SEPECAT Jaguar, the requirement for a trainer had not yet been fulfilled. This resulted in a collaboration between Dassault and Dornier starting in 1968.

The Alpha Jet first flew in 1973, and while France primarily used their Alpha Jets for training purposes, the West German Luftwaffe decided to put their type into service as a light strike platform as well as for training purposes. The first such Alpha Jet A (for "Appui Tactique" or "Light Strike") first flew in 1978, and 175 of the type were delivered by 1983. These were used by Jagdbombergeschwader 41, 43, 44 and 49.

Overview[]

AirLand Battle[]

The Alpha Jet is a light strike platform available to West German and NATO decks. Carrying two BL-775 clusterbombs and a 27mm Mauser BK-27 cannon, the Alpha Jet's low price per aircraft makes the type a good, inexpensive option for carrying out strikes against armored columns. It has little ability to defend itself against enemy fighters, however, and due to its lack of ECM, is vulnerable to long range SAMs and AAMs. Fighter or SEAD escort should be considered before sending the Alpha Jet over hostile territory.

Red Dragon[]

The Alpha Jet in Wargame: Red Dragon is a light strike platform available to West German and NATO decks. It carries two Mk.77 Napalm bombs, making the type useful for area denial operations, or to force vehicles and troops out of cover. The Alpha Jet still does not carry ECM, leaving it vulnerable to long-range SAMs and AAMs, however, at only 50 points per aircraft, its drawbacks are not prohibitive. The type also has a tight turning circle, making it better able to defend itself against threat aircraft with its 27mm Mauser BK-27 cannon.
