The Soviet BMP-685 is the only cavalry tank available to PACT forces when it was first introduced in Wargame: European Escalation. The BMP-685 was rerolled to Vehicles in Wargame: AirLand Battle, but returned to Tanks in Wargame: Red Dragon.

Fast and with great accuracy, the BMP-685 however may require good micromanagement to deal with its poor armour and average AP value.

History[]

"BMP-685" is the hypothetical designation of Object 685. This name is somewhat incorrect as "BMP" stands for "IFV". The vehicle was first designed as a prototype light tank from 1975. Despite the vehicle not entering production, with a chassis and new engine, it served as the basis for the BMP-3.

After production of the PT-76 was discontinued, Soviet engineers began work on developing a suitable replacement around a set of requirements provided by the military. The requirements were sent to three different design bureaus, with each bureau developing its own vehicle around the given specifications. The project's notable requirements were to develop a vehicle with a maximum combat weight of 15 tons, armed with a rifled 100-mm gun, an 9K111 "Fagot" anti-tank missile system, and a 12.7 mm machine gun. The project's protection requirements included anti-nuclear features like automatic sealing and air filtration capabilities, and the ability to withstand up to 23 mm AP rounds.

The Object was made for airborne units to maintain the armoured section of airborne units, at the time those being PT-76, BMD-1 and ASU-85. It featured a greater weight than the PT-76 due to the size and main gun but featured a more compact suspension due to being a telescopic hydraulic shock absorbers and suspension.

Object 788 was disqualified for not including the 9K111 "Fagot", trench-digging equipment, and a water-jet propulsion system. However, both Object 934 and Object 685 managed to pass the initial design evaluation, suggesting that they showed promise despite lacking certain components. It is likely that these designs were later taken into consideration for modifications and improvements to incorporate the missing criteria. Nevertheless, the production was eventually abandoned because they were unable to garner enough interest to continue. Still, later Soviet AFV designs made extensive use of many of the components and design solutions found in Object 934 and Object 685, showing that their potential was recognized and put to good use.

Overview and tactics[]

European Escalation[]

  • The BMP 685 looks at first view as an excellent light tank due its accuracy, speed and low cost. However, it must be noted that it will have problems facing ATGM and high AP values as its armor is mediocre at best.
  • When deployed, the BMP 685 works best with fast recon units (such as the UAZ series) As a light tank it has poor optics and will require spotters to maximize its' range and the accuracy that it features.
  • Avoid direct confrontation with heavy units, as this tank will not last long against these types of enemy tanks, even low tier NATO units such as the Leopard 1 series, AMX-30B and the Patton may have a considerable chance of destroying your BMP 685s without suffering any major casualties.
  • The BMP 685's speed allows it both to outflank and avoid stronger enemy units and catch  light armor as well as infantry. Be sure to always get ready to pull back if you see the situation is adverse as speed is your main defense.

Red Dragon[]

Despite it having good Accuracy/Stabilizer and RoF, light Armor and Range make it impossible for BMP-685 to confront enemy tanks head-on; And it is too expensive to be fire support units. However, for specialized decks, it still has certain advantages (the only available tank for airborne decks).
