The BRDM-3 is a prototype Soviet Armored Recon that appears in Wargame: Red Dragon.
History[]
BRDM stands for "Боевая Разведывательная Дозорная Машина", meaning "Combat Reconnaissance Patrol Vehicle". As its name suggests, this is a wheeled reconnaissance vehicle based on the BTR-80AK. It follows the design of the Soviet APCs, shares the same 2A72 autocannon (reserve ammo is only 300 rounds IRL) on the BTR-80A and has a crew of 6 men (3 demountable scouts).[1]
This vehicle is developed by GAZ OJSC of modern Russia and is not in service with Russian army, but a contract was signed with Kenya for 88 vehicles. In the sale agreement, Kenya approved the delivery of these vehicles by the end of the year 2011.[2][3]
Noted not to be confused with the 9P148.
Overview and tactics[]
The BRDM-3 is basically a BTR-80A (20 points) with Good Optics and Medium Stealth. It is a separate Armored Recon unit, not a Recon APC like ZZC-55 or Ram Recce. From this perspective, the price of 35 points is not very affordable, since even for the Soviet Union alone, the 25-point Recon T-55 also has Good Optics and Medium Stealth, while on that basis, the 15-point PT-76B has Small Size in addition, not to mention the upgraded PT-71 and PT-85. However, it should be pointed out that none of these mentioned Soviet Armored Recon was equipped with MGs.
Therefore, the main advantage (and the reason players bring it) of BRDM-3 lies in its Speed and Suppression of infantry, so it is mainly suitable for the first wave of motorized attacks at the beginning of the round and serves as an auxiliary support unit in the follow-up.
