Introduced in Wargame: European Escalation, the BTR-70 is an eight-wheeled Soviet APC developed in the late 60s to improve the BTR-60 with slightly heavier armor, a more effective turret, and extended operational range. A widely produced vehicle, it equipped many nations of the Warsaw Pact.
History[]
Introduced in 1978 as a replacement to the BTR-60, The BTR-70 is very similar externally to the older vehicle, as many if the improvements made to the vehicle are internal.
Though replaced by the BTR-80 in the early eighties, the BTR-70 continues to serve in many armies world-wide, including most former Warsaw Pact as well as many Middle Eastern, African, and Asian countries.
The BTR-70 was widely used during the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan and many smaller conflicts in Eastern Europe. After the Cold War these AFV saw service with the UN in the Balkans with high success.
These were used in the BTR equipped Motor Rifle Regiments replacing BTR-60 and being replaced by BTR-80.
Overview[]
The BTR-70 is much like any other APC in game. It is almost identical to its predecessor the BTR-60PB, with the only change being slightly stronger front armor. It lacks armour heavy enough to make it worth much in a skirmish, and its armament is too light to do much damage to anyone or anything but infantry and light vehicles.
So the only real viable tactic for the BTR-70 is to use it in the role it was designed for, being a battle taxi. Moving your infantry from point to point quickly, before disembarking them and using your BTR's to support them. The KPVT is marginally effective against helicopters at close range, so keeping your APCs in trees is also a good tactic, allowing you to get the drop on enemy choppers.
