The Bear vs. Dragon is the second campaign of Wargame: Red Dragon. The campaign focuses on a border conflict between China and the Soviet Union in 1979, caused by the former's intervention in Vietnam.[1]
Although the Difficulty of the campaign was marked as "Medium" in-game, but in fact, if players don't attack quickly, they will completely have no means to confront the advanced reinforcements of the Soviet Union. The equipment advantage of the Chinese troops is only existed when confronting some units of the Soviet border defense forces (Primorskiy Krai Fortified Region).

Historical Notes[]
- This conflict may have been inspired by the Sino-Soviet border conflict (中苏边界冲突), a seven-month military conflict between the Soviet Union and China in 1969.
- The title could be a reference to Tom Clancy's political thriller novel The Bear and the Dragon. The novel describes a Chinese invasion into Southeast Russia.
- The People's Liberation Army actually has no rank systems until 1988 (It was abolished in 1965, one year before the Cultural Revolution).
- The PLA also had no reserve formation (Yūbèiyì) until 1983. Prior to that, Chinese ground force consists of either active duty formations or militia units.
- For unknown reasons, the Soviet forces gain several out of time frame units like the T-80A, Su-27S and the Mi-28 in their formations, making it that much harder for the combined Chinese and North Korean forces.
- The PLA is also far more advanced than its real life counterpart in 1979. For examples, the ZBD-86 did not enter Chinese service until 1992; The ZTZ-59-I design was finalized only in 1984 (though the model in-game is an earlier version); The SA.342 HOT, being a Western helicopter, won't be imported until the 1980s; While the J-7 was in service, the primary fighter jet at the time was the MiG-19 based J-6. Obviously, the buffing was made to level the playing ground for the historically much more backward Chinese.

As one can easily imagine, this campaign will pitch China against the USSR in a limited border war in 1979, when the former’s intervention in Vietnam triggers the latter’s reaction.”
