The CF-18 ASuW is a Naval multi-role fighter available to Canadian and BLUFOR decks, first introduced in Wargame: Red Dragon.

History[]

The McDonnell Douglas CF-18 (official designation CF-188) Hornet is a twin-engine, two-tail, single-seat, supersonic multi-role fighter used by the Royal Canadian Air Force. After the need to replace the CF-104 Starfighter was identified in 1977, Canada assessed several NATO aircraft to fill the role. In 1980, the F/A-18 Hornet was announced as the winner, and 98 single-seat models, along with 40 dual-seat models were ordered. The Canadian CF-18 is largely identical to US Navy variants of the F/A-18 Hornet. 1 Canadian Air Division during the late Cold war war used CF-18 only with three squadrons 409, 421 and 439 Squadrons along with four more squadrons stationed in Canada in the NORAD air defense mission along with the European reinforcement mission.

CF-18 Hornet had the capability to carry AGM-84 Harpoon in a anti-ship role.

Overview[]

The CF-18 ASW is a 160-point Naval anti-ship variant of the CF-18/CF-188 available to Canadian and BLUFOR decks. It carries two AGM-84 Harpoon anti-ship missiles, two AIM-9M Sidewinder missiles, and an internal 20mm Vulcan cannon. The CF-18 ASW features improved ECM compared to the CF-18/CF-188 (40%), making the type slightly more survivable against the tough surface to air threat brought on by enemy ships. The CF-18's AGM-84 compliment is powerful and accurate, and the type can also effectively attack enemy helicopters operating in its vicinity, or defend against enemy fighters at close range thanks to its AIM-9M's.

The drawbacks of the CF-18 ASW primarily revolve around its small weapons compliment. A single CF-18 with two AGM-84's is unlikely to damage REDFOR destroyers with superior CIWS, and will have to be sent in pairs to have a chance to saturate the target's defensive systems. The CF-18 also lacks a long range missile to deal with enemy threat fighters, leaving the type vulnerable to attack en-route to target. A fighter escort, then, is recommended when sending the CF-18 out on anti-shipping operations.
