The Norwegian F-16A Fighting Falcon is a multirole combat aircraft that first appeared in Wargame: AirLand Battle.

History[]

The F-16A Fighting Falcon was developed by General Dynamics as part of the United States Air Force Lightweight Fighter (LWF) program. The aircraft, first flown on 20 January 1974, was exported to several NATO members starting in the mid-to-late 1970's, including Norway to replace the aging F-104 Starfighter fleet with the first order started in 1975. The first Norwegian F-16A flew on 12 December 1979, and the aircraft continues to serve in Norway's Air Force to 2021 being replaced by F-35. Three Block 1, 10 Block 5, 15 Block 10 and 32 Block 15 were delivered. These were used in four squadrons 331st skvadron, 332nd skvadron, 334th skvadron and 338th skvadron.

Overview[]

AirLand Battle[]

The Norwegian F-16A Fighting Falcon is one of only two aircraft in the NATO inventory to carry the Mk.84 1000kg unguided bomb; the other being the American F-15E Strike Eagle. This bomb features exceptional high explosive power, and can destroy all but the heaviest armored ground units in a single strike. It can destroy near-by low-flying helicopters and even strike aircraft if they are in the middle of a strafing run near the explosion.

While its speed and tight turning radius help the Norwegian F-16A's survivability, its lack of ECM leaves it vulnerable to radar guided missiles, especially longer range AAMs and SAMs as it is flying toward its target. For defense against aerial opponents, or to attack enemy helicopters, the F-16A (NOR) carries the AIM-9L Sidewinder missile, which has good accuracy, and fair power. To round off its weapon compliment, the F-16A (NOR) carries the M61A1 20mm Vulcan cannon, providing flexibility against aircraft, helicopters, and lightly armored ground targets.

Red Dragon[]

The Norwegian F-16A Fighting Falcon in Wargame: Red Dragon is one of three aircraft in the NATO inventory to carry the Mk. 84 1000kg unguided bomb; the other two being the American F-15D and the Australian F-111C Aardvark. This bomb features exceptional high explosive power, and can destroy all but the heaviest armored ground units in a single strike. It can destroy near-by low-flying helicopters and even strike aircraft if they are in the middle of a strafing run near the explosion.

The Norwegian F-16A has been left largely unchanged between game installments, however, it has received ECM of moderate strength (20%). Its cost is the same as in ALB (125 points per plane), and its loadout unchanged. Its radar is rated "Good." Due to the advances in AAMs and SAMs, the F-16A's strengths, weaknesses, and recommended tactics are largely unchanged; the F-16A simply has slightly improved survivability against long range AAMs and SAMs.
