The F-16C Fighting Falcon is one of the multirole combat aircraft that is available for the United States in Wargame: AirLand Battle.

History[]

The General Dynamics F-16C Fighting Falcon is a Multi-Role jet fighter aircraft originally developed by General Dynamics for the United States Air Force. Originally envisioned as an air superiority day fighter, it evolved into a successful all-weather Multi-Role aircraft. Over 4,500 aircraft have been built since production was approved in 1976. F-16C has Hughes AN/APG-68 radar, a HUD, the capability for AGM-65D Maverick, , more powerful electrical system and two AN/ALE-40 chaff-flare dispensers.

Although no longer being purchased by the U.S. Air Force, improved versions are still being built for export customers. In 1993, General Dynamics sold its aircraft manufacturing business to the Lockheed Corporation, which in turn became part of Lockheed Martin after a 1995 merger with Martin Marietta.

Overview[]

AirLand Battle[]

The F-16C is the United States 135 cost Multi-Role Fighter and the final evolution of the F-16A Fighting Falcon . It is capable of using its 6 High Explosive Anti Tank cluster munitions to devastate lightly armoured vehicle convoys and dated armour as well as suppressing and damaging the morale medium armour. It's usefulness against Heavy armour however is dubious as the most it can do is a tiny amount of damage and suppression. The F-16 is a capable Air to Air fighter though it should be noted that its Sidewinders have a short range and like all Multi-Roles will generally loose to Air Superiority Fighters/Interceptors that are equal or higher in cost.

It also should be noted that because of it's short range in Air to Air combat is it susceptible to being swarmed by large amounts of low cost Aircraft. If caught over your enemies AA network it's medium ECM will not be enough to keep it safe for long and because of this it should only ever be used if you must use it to hold back an enemy force or if you have used your SEAD air power to successfully destroy your enemies RADAR network and have at least cleared most of the Infra-Red missiles. In summary the F-16C Fighting Falcon is a prime contender if you don't have enough air spots for a Multi Role and Ground attack, it is a compromise and like most compromises it doesn't excel in any of it's roles but at least is decent at all of them.

Red Dragon[]

The F-16C Fighting Falcon in Wargame: Red Dragon is a multi-role combat aircraft available to American and NATO decks. It carries the same loadout as in AirLand Battle, has the same cost per unit (135 points per aircraft) and slightly improved ECM (30%). The internal M61A1 has seen an increase to ammunition stores, now carrying 940 rounds. The F-16C has largely the same strengths and weaknesses in Red Dragon as in AirLand Battle.
