The F-4S Phantom II is one of the many multirole combat aircraft that are available to the United States in Wargame: AirLand Battle, it is only available to Marine and non type-specific decks.

History[]

The McDonnell Douglas F-4S Phantom II is a modernized F-4J. The conversion process for 302 F-4J airframes began in 1977 to improve the aircraft. The airframe was strengthened, the AWG-10A fire control system installed, and the aircraft received J79-GE-10B turbojet engines. Leading-edge slats on the outer panels of the wings were added to provide for better maneuverability at slower speeds, and a new Radar Warning Receiver (RWR) was also fitted to the aircraft.

F-4S were used in VF Squadrons in the US Navy being replaced by F-14 with the the last squadron VF-202 replacing their F-4S to F-14 in 1987 while the USMC used their F-4S in VMFA squadrons being replaced by F-18 with the last one leaving USMCR service in 1992.

Overview[]

AirLand Battle[]

The F-4S is similar in performance to the F-4J, but more costly. The main improvements to the aircraft are an increased napalm payload, and the replacement of the AIM-9J Sidewinder with the more accurate AIM-9L. Like the F-4J, the Phantom is best used to attack entrenched infantry and vehicles, or for area-denial purposes with its napalm bombs. The inclusion of the AIM-9L provides for enhanced helicopter attacking capability, as the "L" has better accuracy, and slightly improved range against helicopters over the "J".

The F-4S does not carry a gun, and like the F-4J, does not have an ECM suite or a medium-range missile option. It is vulnerable to long-range radar guided SAMs and AAMs from enemy fighters. Like the F-4J, the F-4S does have a good top speed, however, and its survivability relies heavily on the fact that it can get to its drop point quickly, and out of the area in relatively little time.

Red Dragon[]

The F-4S in Red Dragon is largely unchanged from its AirLand Battle configuration. It still carries two AIM-9L Sidewinder missiles and eight Mk.77 Napalm bombs. The chief difference is the inclusion of ECM of decent strength (30%), which is also likely why it costs 120 points, compared to 105 for ALB. This addition makes the F-4S more survivable if it is fired upon by long-range SAMs or AAMs, but in general, the strengths, weaknesses, and uses for the F-4S are the same in Red Dragon as in AirLand Battle.
