F-5A | KF-5E Jegong-Ho |
The F-5A is a ground attack aircraft available to South Korea in Wargame: Red Dragon.
History[]
The Northrop F-5A Freedom Fighter is a twin-engine, single-seat, tactical fighter. The F-5A was developed in the late 1950's as a supersonic lightweight fighter, but found little use in American arsenals - the later F-5E Tiger II was employed as a MiG-21 simulator in aggressor squadrons. However, the F-5A and subsequent family saw great success as an export fighter, and was sold to, or license-built in more than 30 countries. The Republic of Korea Air Force purchased 118 single-seat F-5A and two-seat F-5B models from the United States starting in 1965 with the last F-5A leaving service in 2024 being replaced by F-15K and by the KAI F/A-50. F-5A first entered service in early April of 1965 with 105th Fighter Squadron of the 10th Fighter Wing along with 14 more for 102nd FS. In 1972 36 F-5A were transferred to South Vietnam. After the fall of South Vietnam 19 former Vietnamese F-5A were transfer to South Korea along with two more American F-5A. These were used in a ground attack role.
Overview[]
Red Dragon[]
The F-5A is a relatively inexpensive light strike platform available to South Korean and NATO-allied decks. It carries four Mk. 77 Napalm Bombs and twin Pontiac M39A2 cannons. Its relatively slow speed and lack of ECM make the F-5A vulnerable to long range SAMs and AAMs, but the F-5A's 80-point price and Napalm armament make it a cost-effective tool for area denial, or for burning troops and vehicles out of cover. Although not as ideal as missiles or the more accurate Vulcan, the F-5A's twin Pontiac 20mm's give it a small level of defense against threat fighters, and the ability to attack enemy helicopters in a pinch.
