The Hærhjemmeværnet (Danish: Army Home Guard) is the main Danish reserve infantry unit, it appears in Wargame: AirLand Battle. The Hærhjemmeværnet are one of the most useful reserve units in the game, they are cheap and numerous, and are very good at Close-quarters combat with their SMGs.
History[]
Hær Hjemmeværnet (Danish Army Home Guard) was formed after the second world war as a means of preventing occupation from foreign powers during the Cold War. The Home Guard was created in the late 1940's by the danish resistance movement that had been small, but years in the making. Since the resistance was made up of primarily civilians, that had recieved training from british and former danish soldiers, an idea of a sort of civil defence force was well liked, especially after almost 5 years of german occupation. The government decided to formally arm, train and control these resistance fighter into a single force, instead of small resistance cells. The Home Guard was organized in a way, so that a local area would have its own company of guardsmen, formed from the local men and women.
The Home Guard today consist of different branches such as, the Army, the Navy, the Airforce, the Police Home Guard, all with special roles in case of Denmark going to war. The Home Guard is made from volunteers that go to a shorter boot camp, to learn the basics of soldiering, and there are many opportunities for the guardsman to specialize.
The Danish Homeguard have many speciality roles, not just in Denmark, but anywhere that Denmark contributes with armed forces, the Home Guard is sure to follow and do its part. During the Cold War, the Homeguard was trained in resisting invasion forces, so they were trained in both organized/suprise attack and guerilla (hit and run) tactics.
