The Harrier GR.1 is a multirole combat aircraft for the United Kingdom that first appeared in Wargame: AirLand Battle.

History[]

The Hawker Siddeley Harrier is a single-engine, single-seat, Vertical/Short Takeoff and Landing (V/STOL) multi-role combat aircraft used by the Royal Air Force. Known colloquially as the "Harrier Jump Jet", The Harrier GR.1 was developed in the 1960s and formed the first generation of the Harrier series of aircraft. It was the first operational close-support and reconnaissance fighter aircraft with V/STOL capabilities, and the only truly successful V/STOL design of the many that arose in that era.

First flown in 1967, the Royal Air Force ordered the Harrier GR.1 in the late 1960s and received the type operationally in 1969. It was exported to the United States as the AV-8A, for use by the US Marine Corps, in the 1970s. Three squadrons were deployed to RAF Germany with the third being disbanded and the aircraft divided up between the other two squadrons. No. 1 Squadron remained in United Kingdom was specifically earmarked for Norwegian operations. These were used in Ground Attack roles with the capability to be use camouflaged rough bases.

Overview[]

AirLand Battle[]

The Harrier GR.1 is an inexpensive strike platform available to United Kingdom and NATO decks. Equipped with twin ADEN 30 cannons and two 500kg MC/GP Mk. 10 bombs, the type can effectively attack light to moderately armored vehicles and infantry. Although the Mk. 10 is not as powerful as the devastating Mk.84, its high explosive power is close to the larger 1000kg bomb, and the GR.1 provides powerful strike capability for low cost. The major drawbacks of the Harrier GR.1 are its lack of ECM, lack of an air-to-air missile compliment, and low top-speed. These drawbacks leave the Harrier GR.1 vulnerable to long range SAMs and AAMs, and fighter aircraft in general. Given its low cost, these drawbacks are far from prohibitive, and good timing, or a fighter escort, can minimize the threat to the GR.1.

Red Dragon[]

The Harrier GR.1 is largely unchanged in Wargame: Red Dragon compared to its AirLand Battle incarnation. The type has seen a reduction to 150 rounds of cannon ammo, an increase in time over target of 5 seconds, and is otherwise identical to its former configuration. Its strengths and weaknesses are largely the same between the two entries.
