The JA37 Viggen (English: Thunderbolt) is an air superiority fighter available to Swedish and NATO decks. It was introduced in Wargame: AirLand Battle.

History[]

The JA 37 Viggen is a single-seat, single-engine, supersonic fighter developed by Saab for the Flygvapnet (Swedish Air Force). Based upon the AJ 37 and Sk 37 designs, the JA variant was first delivered in 1979 and operationally accepted in 1980 to replace the J 35 Draken aircraft in the interceptor role. The type was fitted with an Ericsson PS46/A radar, which could guide two semi-active radar homing missiles simultaneously, as well as a new Oerlikon 30mm cannon to replace the older ADEN 30 carried by the AJ 37. It also saw the installation of the more powerful RM8B afterburning turbofan engine offering some 2000 more pounds of thrust over the RM8A, and compatibility with new ECM systems and chaff dispensers.

In 1989, JA 37 served in the bulk of the Fighter Air Wings 4th Air Wing with 41. and 42. fighter squadrons, 13th Air Wing with 132. fighter squadron, 16th Air Wing with 162. and 163. fighter squadrons, 17th Air Wing with 171. fighter squadron and 21st Air Wing with 212. and 213. fighter squadrons.

Overview[]

AirLand Battle[]

The JA37 Viggen is an air superiority fighter available to Swedish and NATO decks. It carries an internal Akan m/75 30mm cannon, four Rb 24J short range air to air missiles and two long range semi-active Rb 71s. The type features Medium ECM, giving it moderate protection against long range SAMs and AAMs. The type is ideal for helicopter hunting, and has decent air combat capabilities in general with its combination of long and short range missiles, and internal cannon. The chief drawback of the JA37 is its lack of an active AAM. The Rb 71, while accurate, is a semi-active missile which requires the JA37 to close with its target, and this increases the likelihood the JA37 will take return fire. This drawback is far from prohibitive, and the JA37 provides good aerial fighting capabilities for its cost.

Red Dragon[]

The JA 37 Viggen in Wargame: Red Dragon is an air superiority fighter available to Swedish and BLUFOR decks. Its configuration is largely unchanged from AirLand Battle, though the type has seen a 10-point cost reduction per aircraft, a minor bump up in ECM to 30%, and its cannon was reverted to the ADEN 30. Its advantages and disadvantages are largely the same in Red Dragon as in AirLand Battle.
