K1 | K1A1 |
The K1 is a main battle tank used by the South Korean armed forces. It was largely based on the American M1 Abrams. The vehicle was first introduced in Wargame: Red Dragon.
History[]
The vehicle is also known as "K-1 전차" and "88 전차" in some Korean sources.
The K1 development project received its kick start in the late 1970s when the South Korean government urgently ordered the commission of a new, modern tank to replace the aging M48 and M4A3E8 Sherman formations. The development project, codenamed "XK1", was assigned to the American defense company General Dynamics. With the development of the tank completed in 1983, the finished tank design held very similar parameters to the M1 Abrams. The K1 entered mass production 1985, being built by Hyundai Precision. It began service around 1987.
What sets K1 apart from M1 Abrams is its lower appearance, as well as a more complex armor profile. This design can reduce the probability of tanks being hit, but it also leads to narrower internal space (although its Size was still marked as Big in-game). In addition, K1 uses German MTU diesel engines instead of gas turbines used in M1 (reportedly it is because the US does not want K1 to be exported). K1 also adopts a hybrid suspension system that combines hydro-pneumatic suspension with torsion-bar suspension. Besides, K1 reduces weight by 3.4 tons compared to M1. These points are designed to make K1 more suitable for the mountainous conditions of the Korean Peninsula. For example, the pitch angle of the K1's main gun is -10 degrees to +20 degrees, which is undoubtedly superior to Soviet tanks that designed for plain warfare.
It should be noted that the three MGs equipped with K1 are one 7.62mm M60E2 for coaxial, one 7.62mm M60D and one 12.7mm K6 (M2) on the turret for the loader and commander respectively, instead of M240 in-stats (the model is correct).
These served in the armored battalions of 3 Armored Brigades and the 4 Mechanized Divisions production starting in 1985. As of 2016, there were a total of 1027 K1s in service.
Overview[]
- Decent top, side, and back armor value for its price.
- Big size meant that it could become more vulnerable should it be left idling for too long.
- Has 35 rounds of ammunition for the main gun, more than any other tank of its class.
- Two well-rounded machine guns provide a choice of balance between quality and quantity of machine gun shots.
- Similar all-round characteristics with the M1IP Abrams meant easier transition from traditional USA faction players.
