The Lì Jiàn '90 (Chinese: 利剑, meaning "Sharp Sword") is a Chinese commando squad unit that initially appeared in Wargame: Red Dragon. It is the successor of Lì Jiàn.

History[]

"利剑" is a common name among Chinese special forces, while its portrait is based on Type 81 ghillie suit, which was commonly seen among Chinese reconnaissance troops during the Sino-Vietnamese War.

Joint special operation force of the PLA, at the time of this writing has 12 different special units spread across the mainland China. Belived to be numbering between 7000 to 14000 troops, PLA-SOF acts as a rapid response unit for limited war situations using high tech equipment. They are capable of carrying out commando, counter-terrorism and intelligence gathering operations.

Rapid expansion of China’s special forces units suggests a radical change of doctrine from China’s traditional “people’s war” tactics to fully fledged, technologically advanced local warfare operations. PLA planners suggested that China’s old military thinking which focuses on large infantry formations and guerilla warfare is insufficent to meet the needs of modern warfare. Considering the fact that Vietnamese special forces caused considerable headache to PLA during 1979 and 1980 border conficts, PLA’s intention is understandably, to expand and improve its special forces capabilities.

Overview and tactics[]

Despite being more effective at killing infantry with the napalm launcher, the 90 variant is a lot less cost effective compared to the base variant because of over specialization. Lacking a LAW, Lì Jiàn '90 is forced to be paired with either Lù Zhànduì '90 or Yuckjeondae '90 which can represent a huge investment. On the other hand, the base variant carries a 40 suppression SMG which makes them highly effective at dealing with infantry in forest. On top of that, they can use used alone without worrying about 2 Armor light vehicles.
