The LAAD Redeye is an anti-aircraft team for the United States in the Wargame series, they first appear in Wargame: European Escalation.

History[]

The FIM-43 Redeye is the first man-portable air defense system used by the US military. At 1948 the US Army searched for a infantry protable air defense system since the M2 machineguns were uneffective against Jet powered aircraft. In April 1958, Convair started development for FIM-43 Redeye and full scale development began in July 1959. The Redeye first fired in March 1960 without the use of the launcher, and in May 1961 FIM-43 Redeye first fired using launcher. FIM-43 Redeye lead to the FIM-92 Stinger still in use today.

The major weakness of Redeye was that like all first generation infrared missile, Redeyes were tail chasers.

Old organization of the various formations using H-Series TO&E or the Army of Army of Excellence had either Combat Support Company or Headquarters Troop in Cavalry Squadrons having a AAGW Section each with five Redeye teams.

Redeye entered USMC service starting in 1967 in divisional FAAD platoons these platoon were transferred to Marine Air Group and expanded into Low Altitude Air Defense Battalion. These Redeyes were replaced by Stingers starting in 1972.

Compared to the 5 point expensive LAAD Stinger, Redeye's disadvantage lies in a 5 point lower Accuracy and a more lethal 3 point HE Power. The latter means that even the lightest reconnaissance helicopter will require two missiles to shoot down. Additionally, since the deployable quantity of Redeye and Stinger is exactly the same, there is no advantage in improving Accuracy through using higher-Veterancy troops.

For the US military in the 1990s, they already had two models of Stingers (A&C) to choose from. The worst thing about Redeye is that its HE Power is only 3, which means that any helicopter will require two hits to be shot down. This, combined with its only 35% Accuracy, will make any player who tries to rely on Redeye "red eyed"
