FIM-92C Stinger-RMP (Reprogrammable Microprocessor) began in 1984. This upgrade allows reprogramming the on-board microprocessors' software to counter the latest threats. Production started in September 1987 and deliveries started in July 1989.

The Air Defense Battalion of the Heavy Division has a Stinger platoon in each air defense batteries along with another Stinger platoon in the headquarter battery to serve in maneuver units. These were mounted in M998 Humvee. There are proposals for Stinger under Armor for Stinger teams mounted in M113 so the team can be mounted in a armored personnel carrier.

The light divisions had in their towed Vulcan batteries a Stinger platoon.

Armored Cavalry Regiment has either a Vulcan Stinger battery or a Avenger / Stinger battery.

USMC used theirs in Low Altitude Air Defense Battalions.
