The Leclerc is a French main battle tank appearing in Wargame: Red Dragon.

History[]

The original intention for the construction of the Leclerc was meant to replace the AMX-30 tanks with studies initiating in 1964. In 1971, in view of the AMX-30's inferiority to Soviet tanks in terms of firepower, quantity, a study was carried out. 4 years later, a committee was signed that in 1977, it agreed on a classified list of specifications. By the 80s, West Germany and France began to collaborate on a new tank and that it would be solely be French built and after studying designs from the American Abrams, German Leopard 2 and Israeli Merkava, they were rejected.

Prototypes were constructed in 1989. By 1991, with the replacement of the AMX-30s beginning, the Leclercs began to be made in larger quantities. The United Arab Emirates ordered 436 vehicles, in turn of retiring their AMX-30s with the French Army planning to have 426 units. The UAE would donate 80 tanks to the Royal Jordanian Army. These were used in the Armored Regiments organized into two squadron group each with three squadrons. The Tank Squadron changed from pure four tank platoons supported by a VAB platoon to three to four tank platoons with organic VBL element.

The Leclerc is currently used by the UAE in their war in Yemen.

The only operators of the Leclerc are France, Jordan and the UAE with India and Croatia showing interest.
