Introduced in Wargame: European Escalation, the Leopard 1A2 is an improved variant of the Leopard 1A1 MBT available for West Germany, and also exported to other NATO countries.
History[]
The Leopard 1 series of main battle tanks has served West Germany and its allies since 1965. The Leopard 1A2 was the second upgrade of the Leopard 1 and came with a thermal shroud for the main gun, side skirts and a thicker cast turret.
The first 232 tanks of the fifth production batch was delivered as the Leopard 1A2 between 1972 and 1974. The A2 included a heavier and better armored turret, and therefore did not receive the B&V armor add-ons as did the earlier machines.
They did receive the other upgrades however; the Leopard 1A2A1 received the PZB 200 image intensification system, the Leopard 1A2A2 received digital radios, and the Leopard 1A2A3 got both.
During the late Cold War 6. Panzergrenadier-Division still had Leopard 1A2.
Overview[]
European Escalation[]
The vehicle has better protection on its front and side armor (+1), as well as the addition of a machine-gun, allowing it to engage enemy infantry more effectively and to engage helicopters.
Red Dragon[]
After entering the 1990s, the Leopard 1A2 was already a relatively outdated tank, making it difficult to be used effectively in offensive tasks. When used as cheap direct fire support, West Germany's allies often had better options, like AMX-10 RC SB and AMX-13 FL-15.
