M270 ATACMS is a MLRS that appears in Wargame: Red Dragon.

History[]

With the increase in conventional firepower in the late Cold war, American army needed a conventional cruise missile to engage incoming follow on forces without using tactical nuclear weapons. M39 was created to fill this role, These missile replaced the normal 12 rockets with two missiles. First development started in 1980 and first deployment in 1989.

During the Cold War MLRS served in Battery level in the heavy divisions. Some Artillery battalions of Field Artillery Brigades which were Corp and Army level forces were equipped with MLRS.

Overview[]

The M270 ATACMS is a prototype unit for the US faction. While being listed as a multiple rocket launcher in the armory, it is the most accurate artillery in the game with a dispersion of only 910m and a maximum range of 105 kilometers. The launcher only carries two rockets which act as cluster bombs upon impact making it devastating to armored targets. This MLRS is not to be confused with the other M270s in game which are much less powerful.

Weapons[]

Armed with two extremely long distance pinpoint accurate extremely powerful cluster missiles with a hefty minimum targeting distance, this vehicle is best if kept far behind the front lines where they can use their long range capability. They require frequent rearms and being few in number per deck makes this unit an extremely valuable asset on the battlefield. The vehicle is best suited for spot removal, and despite the classification, should not be used as an MLRS. It is perfect for destroying grouped vehicles, preferably of high value. It is also ideal for counter battery duty, while on the topic, the ATACMS is a priority target for basically everything, and the fact that it will only fire one or two shot at a time makes it very difficult for the enemy to locate the ordnance's origin. A hefty amount of effort is often required if the enemy wishes for it to be destroyed. With good recon, the ATACMS can easily snipe high value targets, such as CV's and mortar clusters. If the enemy is foolish enough to group vehicles, the ATACMS can easily exploit it.
