The Aermacchi MB-339CB is a military trainer and light attack aircraft used by the Royal New Zealand Air Force. It is a variant of the Italian Aermacchi MB-339.
History[]
The MB-339CB is a single-engine, two-seat, subsonic trainer and light strike aircraft developed by Aermacchi and used by the Royal New Zealand Air Force. First flown in 1976 and introduced in 1979, the MB-339 started as a replacement for the MB-326 in Italian arsenals. The MB-339CB was purchased by the RNZAF starting in 1991 to replace their BAC Strikemaster fleet.
RNZAF used MB-339CB in No 14 Squadron for advance training.
Overview[]
The MB-339CB is a relatively inexpensive light strike platform available to ANZAC and BLUFOR decks. It carries six napalm bombs as its armament. As such, it fulfills the very specific purpose of area denial and to flush infantry and vehicles out of cover. It has no aerial armament and is vulnerable to long range SAMs and enemy fighter aircraft. The MB-339CB is a specialized aircraft with a specialized role, and this should be considered when deciding whether or not to include the type in a deck.
