The Maglan (Hebrew: מגלן, meaning "Ibis") is a prototype Israeli Recon Team that appears in Nation Pack: Israel DLC of Wargame: Red Dragon.
History[]
Maglan, also known as Unit 212 or Sayeret Maglan, is an Israeli Special Forces unit which specializes in operating behind enemy lines and deep in enemy territory using advanced technologies and weaponry. Though Maglan is part of the IDF's Commando Brigade, its operators undergo basic training with the Paratroopers Brigade.
Maglan was established in June 1986, but their presence was not widely known until 2006, as Israeli officials have consistently denied the existence of this unit.
About the name of this unit, according to one officer, "Maglan is a bird that knows how to adapt in every situation", while the first commander of the unit, Lt. Col. (ret.) Danny Herman, said, "This bird is very rare in Israel, but it is very popular and has started building nests here, which means it has adapted to life here and gradually integrated into the growing country".[1][2]
Glilon, which is better known as Galil SAR, is the shortened barrel version of standard Galil. The Negev is the IDF's replacement of Galil ARM and MAG (infantry use) that design finalized in 1995 and adopted in 1997, while the year dated for Maglan however is 1986.[3]
On the other hand, as shown in the portrait, the Mitznefet (nicknamed "chef hat" by western) is adopted by IDF in 1994. The Spike missile was designed in 1987 but adopted in 1997.
Overview and tactics[]
A low-strength (used to be 10-men) reconnaissance infantry unit with a powerful ATGM and excellent sight and stealth, the commandos of the Sayeret Maglan are comparable to Cavalry Scouts - that is saying tactical style, as this comparison is made between a Superman and a Boxer.
Much like their lesser American counterparts, Maglans excel at engaging armour, able to do so at greater range and power, while being more than capable of holding their own in the event they are confronted by infantry. While they can't be brought alongside with regular APCs like the Cavalry Scouts' M113A3 Super Dragon, they can come packaged with the fearsome Yas'ur Nimrod, which is infinitely far more capable of ripping through armoured formations than a M113 ever was.
With a missile able to crack open enemy superheavies, high-quality optics and many bullets with which to fend off a hapless rifle squad, the Maglan is probably the best anti-tank team in the game. Consequently, losing them to the same weaknesses as anti-tank teams is rather more painful than with any other AT unit. For one, their low strength means that they tend to die rather quickly when coming under cannon fire. They are also much less capable of defending themselves against high-strength infantry than most other Elite-tier units, for example Polish Komandosi or PLA Lì Jiàn '90, who will shred apart a group of Maglans when approaching as a quad-stack.
Finally, do keep tabs on missile usage: AT teams have a displeasing habit of wasting their ammo on mere cars and trucks, and Maglans are no exception.
