The Merkava IIB is a Israeli Main Battle Tank that appears in Nation Pack: Israel DLC of Wargame: Red Dragon.
History[]
The design of the Merkava (Hebrew: מרכבה, meaning "Chariot") series is specifically with the IDF requirements in mind. All variants feature sloped armor and front-mounted engines, offering maximum protection to their crews. The design has its roots in the 1970s in a program led by one of the most influential tank visionaries of all time, General Israel Tal. Its heavily upgraded variants are still in service.
In many ways, Merkava Mk.II was what Mk.I should have been, had it not been pressed into service too early. The 1983 Merkava Mk.II was a result of the experience gained in the war, aimed at removing the most obvious Mk.I vulnerabilities. It received extra armor and the notorious rear turret shot trap was solved by the iconic hanging chains, intended to detonate incoming RPGs. The tank also received a new fire extinguisher system, a new transmission, more fuel capacity, and in 1984, a new Elbit Matador 2 FCS for its 105mm M68 gun. From 1985 forwards, the Merkava Mk.II received its final major upgrade to the Mk.IIB (or Mk.II Bet) version, consisting of improved side skirts, the Moked “Third Eye” Laser Warning Receiver and several other elements.
The Merkava Mk.II was first manufactured in 1983, and it was last produced in 1989, with 580 units constructed in total. It saw service in several local battles, where it performed well. The final Merkava Mk.II tank was moved to reserve units in 2016. Most of the remaining tanks are currently in storage, though these might potentially be modified to become armoured personnel carriers. They were never exported.
Overview[]
The armaments of Merkava IIB is almost identical with the M1IP, while its armor is a little better. However, it should be noticed that the speed of this tank is only 50 KPH. This makes it sometimes difficult for Merkava series to avoid enemy long-range firepower and the corresponding morale impact.
