The MiG-19PM is a Polish Air Superiority Fighter available to REDFOR decks that appears in Wargame: AirLand Battle .
History[]
The Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-19PM (NATO Reporting Name: FARMER-E) is a twin-engine, single-seat, supersonic fighter developed for the Soviet Air Force and exported to Soviet-allied nations. Developed out of the MiG-17, the MiG-19 was the first Soviet fighter that could achieve supersonic speeds in level flight, and was introduced to front-line service in 1955. The PM model of the MiG-19 removed the aircraft's wing-root mounted cannons, and added compatibility with the Kaliningrad K-5 beam-riding and R-55 semi-active radar homing or infrared guided air-to-air missiles.
12 MiG-19PM served in the Polish Air Force between 1957 and 1974. These left service due to lack of numbers, complex engine design and the introduction of MIG-21 to Polish service.
Overview[]
The MiG-19PM is an inexpensive air superiority fighter available to Polish and REDFOR decks. It has moderate top speed, an average turn radius, and carries four R-55 infrared guided air-to-air missiles and weak ECM. It is most useful as an expedient helicopter hunter or bomber-interceptor. The R-55 missile is not particularly maneuverable, but is fairly powerful, with an HE value of 5.
The MiG-19PM is out-gunned by almost all Western fighters at long or close ranges, and its poor ECM does little to protect the aircraft. That said, the extremely low cost of the MiG-19PM allows the commander to field the aircraft rapidly, and in large groups. Good timing and tactics can allow the MiG-19PM to be used to great effect for low cost.
