The MiG-23BN was an East German Multirole Combat Aircraft when it was introduced in Wargame: AirLand Battle. It was rearmed and re-rolled to Ground Attack Aircraft in Wargame: Red Dragon.

History[]

The MiG-23BN is a single-engine, single-seat, variable-geometry wing fighter produced by Mikoyan-Gurevich for the Soviet Air Force. The MiG-23BN (NATO Reporting Name: FLOGGER-H) was based on the MiG-23B "FLOGGER-F" ground attack aircraft, and first flew in 1973. The type received the same engine as its contemporary fighter variants, the R-29-300, compared to the AL-21 which powered the MiG-23B. The MiG-23B series' strike roll required several redesigns from the fighter/interceptor configuration of the M-series. As such, the MiG-23B/BN have a cropped nose and higher seat for better visibility, up-armored windscreen, and no radar.

East Germany used 22 MiG-23BNs. Jagdbombenfliegergeschwader 37 used MiG-23BN.

Overview[]

AirLand Battle[]

The MiG-23BN is a relatively inexpensive strike platform available to East German and REDFOR decks. It is armed with a single GSh-23L cannon, four RBK-500 anti-tank cluster bombs and two AAM Infrared missiles.

The speed isn't the best but it is very close, the MiG-23BN is vulnerable to both enemy SAMs and AAMs.

Red Dragon[]

In Red Dragon, the MiG-23BN traded its 2 R-60 Molniya AAMs to 2 additional RBK-500 anti-tank cluster bombs, transformed into a pure Ground Attack Aircraft.

The type has better ECM than the East German MiG-23ML fighter, though it is of moderate power (20%), exceptional speed, and its six large HEAT cluster bombs make the type deadly against the top armor of tanks and transports alike.

The major drawbacks of the MiG-23BN include its relatively poor ECM and lack of any air to air missiles. These factors leave the MiG-23BN vulnerable to both enemy SAMs and AAMs, while the MiG-23BN's ability to strike back at enemy aircraft is very limited. As such, a fighter or SEAD escort should be considered when employing the BN.
