The MiG-31 is a Soviet fighter aircraft available to Warsaw Pact forces.

History[]

Developed in the late 1970's, the Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-31 (NATO reporting name "FOXHOUND") was designed as a long-range inteceptor, and addressed issues with the MiG-25 "FOXBAT" series. It features refined aerodynamics, major structural differences, a new powerplant, and an improved radar and weapon suite. Carrying the "Zaslon" Passively Electronically Scanned Array (PESA) radar and long-range Vympel R-33 missiles, the MiG-31 can engage multiple threat aircraft at comparable range to the American F-14 Tomcat.

Overview[]

AirLand Battle[]

The MiG-31 is one of two families aircraft with a truly long-range missile compliment, the other being the F-14. The baseline MiG-31 carries four R-33E Vympel long range missiles. Unlike the AIM-54, or the MiG-31M's R-37, the R-33E is a semi-active radar guided missile. This requires the MiG-31 to continue to close with its target, and can put it within range of a threat aircraft's weapon compliment. The R-33E does provide the MiG-31 with first shot capability against all NATO fighters except the F-14, however, and unless the target fighter is carrying fire and forget medium range missiles, the R-33's own range helps to mitigate the threat to the MiG-31.

The MiG-31 does not carry a short range missile compliment, and so is vulnerable to short range fighters if they get close. It does carry a 23mm GSh-6-23 cannon, which allows it to attack helicopters, perform strafing runs against lightly armored ground targets, or to defend itself against enemy fighters close in. Its bad ECM rating also makes the Foxhound vulnerable to long-range radar-guided SAMs. The type is best used to fire at long ranges as enemy aircraft appear, or may be used in the later game as an expedient ground strafing platform, especially if enemy Integrated Air Defense Systems (IADS) have been eliminated.

Red Dragon[]

The MiG-31 in Wargame: Red Dragon is one of the two aircraft families with a truly long-range missile compliment, the other being the F-14. The MiG-31 is largely in the same configuration as in AirLand Battle, carrying a GSh-6-23 cannon with 200 rounds and four R-33E Vympel long-range air to air missiles, however, the type has received a significant boost in ECM to 40%. This boost comes at a price, and the MiG-31 now costs 140 points per aircraft to field. The MiG-31's R-33E out-ranges all NATO missiles except the AIM-54, granting the MiG-31 first shot against almost all NATO fighters.

Its strengths and weaknesses are largely the same in Red Dragon as in AirLand Battle, but the type is much more survivable against long range SAMs and AAMs, though its turn circle and lack of a short-range missile compliment leaves it vulnerable to fighters that get past its R-33E.
