The Mirage IIIC is a multirole combat aircraft for France that first appeared in Wargame: AirLand Battle.

History[]

The Mirage IIIC is a supersonic, single-engine, single-seat multirole fighter developed for the French Air Force by Dassault. First flown in 1956, and introduced into French arsenals in 1961, the Mirage III design was found to be so versatile that it enabled the production of trainer, reconnaissance and ground-attack versions as well as the Mirage 5 variant. The Mirage IIIC was developed as a single-seat interceptor, and 95 of the type would equip the Armée de l'Air. The type was originally equipped with three pylons for carrying a single long-range missile and two short-range AIM-9 or Magic missiles. The Mirage IIIC, as well as other variants of the III were highly successful in the export market, equipping the air forces of some 20 countries over the type's service life.

Overview[]

AirLand Battle[]

The Mirage IIIC is a moderately priced multi-role combat aircraft available to French and NATO decks. Armed with twin DEFA 550 30mm cannons, four napalm bombs and two R.550 Magic missiles, the Mirage IIIC can be used for area denial operations, to flush enemy infantry and tanks from cover, or for attacking enemy helicopters operating in its vicinity. The Mirage IIIC has a few drawbacks, namely its lack of ECM and lack of a long-range missile. The Mirage IIIC's lack of ECM leaves it vulnerable to long range SAMs and AAMs. Its short range aerial weapon compliment, while accurate, requires the Mirage to get close to its intended target, and it is unlikely for the Mirage to get the first shot against a similarly priced enemy air superiority fighter, and a fighter escort is recommended if enemy air activity is anticipated.

Red Dragon[]

The Mirage IIIC in Wargame: Red Dragon is nearly unchanged from its AirLand Battle configuration, and is available to French and BLUFOR decks. The aircraft has the same cost and characteristics, but has received two more napalm bombs for improved area denial and troop/vehicle flushing operations. Its advantages and drawbacks are largely the same between the two installments.
