Olifant Mk1 is a South African Main Battle Tank that appears in Wargame Red Dragon as part of the South African DLC.

History[]

South Africa bought 203 Centurion Mk 3 tanks from the United Kingdom in 1953 with the intention to provide a force to Commonwealth Middle East Armoured Division. After the South Africa withdrawal from the Commonwealth half of the Centurion fleet was sold to Sweden. After the deployment of a armored threat from FAPLA and Cuba, Centurion tanks were upgraded to the Olifant Mk 1 with 750 hp diesel engine and semi-automatic transmission. These tank entered South African service in 1978.

South Africa deployed tanks in squadron strength to the Mechanized Battlegroups. These came from the regular School of Armor's Tank Wing and the reserve Natal Mounted Rifles, Regiment President Steyn and Pretoria Regiment.
