The Panzergrenadier (Translated to Armored Infantrymen) are the shock infantry of West Germany and are excellent infantry and vehicle killers, armed with excellent anti-tank weapons yet well drilled with the G3 assault rifle and their I.MG3 machine guns.

Overview[]

They are very good at their main purpose, which is to support tank formations in combat. However, PzGs should never be trusted with clearing a forest of armor, as their AT weapons have a long reload and fail at close quarters.

PzGren are one of the few shock infantry units that can be used with armoured decks, which generally lack the good-quality infantry required to clear urban and forest areas, thus providing protection for the player's tanks. Their main transport vehicles, the Marder series, are fast, hard hitting and well armored. In short, they are a great addition to an armored deck, and the core of a West German mechanized deck.

History[]

The term Panzergrenadier originated in the Heer and SS during the Second World War, and was applied by the post-war West German military, the Bundeswehr, to the mechanized infantry units that make up the backbone of the army to this day. Armed with G3 rifles, Pzf44 or (post 1993) Pzf3 light anti-tank weapons, Milan guided-anti-tank weapons and MG3 Medium Machine Guns, the Panzergrenadier were a powerful force to be reckoned with.

They originally operated from M113 APCs, Schützenpanzer HS.30 Lang and Unimog S404 but switched to the Marders as they came online. The Marder equipped Panzergrenadier company has 11 Marder equipped in a CHQ vehicle and three platoons of three Marder along with a reserve section Marder. The M113 equipped Panzergrenadier company has 10 organized into a CHQ vehicle and three platoons of three M113. Panzergrenadier had a higher allocation of MILAN with planned issue of a MILAN to each section vehicle but with two Marder equipped with MILAN. The M113 mounted Panzergrenadier platoons vehicles were equipped a MILAN each. Panzergrenadier platoon mounted in Marder was organized into a command squad Zugtrupp of 6 and two squads of 6.
