Ratel 20 is a South African Infantry Fighting Vehicle that first appears in the South African DLC of Wargame: Red Dragon.
History[]
During the 1950, South Africa used United Kingdom infantry doctrine due to Commonwealth ties but due to deterioration of relations between South Africa and the United Kingdom South Africa went their own way. South Africa used Saracen which were wheeled APCs.
Unlike other contemporary IFVs that were designed to support armored formations, Ratel were designed to fight battles in Southern Africa which favored wheels instead of tracks to reduce the logistical cost of replacing tracks and poor transportation networks. Unlike their European counterparts Ratel was designed for mobility in low force density combat. First Ratel 20 entered service in 1975. These Ratel 20 gave the South Africa mechanized infantry the capability for mounted and dismounted combat. These were armed with F2 20 mm a licensed copy of French GIAT gun.
These were used in Mechanized Infantry Battalions and battlegroups.
