Spetsnaz GRU is a Soviet Recon Team that appears in the Second Korean War DLC of Wargame: Red Dragon.
History[]
The Soviet Military Intelligence service, GRU, has jurisdiction over the Chasti Spetsial’nogo Naznacheniya , or Spetsnaz units, of the Russian Army. These units are akin to American special forces, but with a focus on sabotage and disruption. Their primary mission is to operate behind enemy lines during wartime and cause as much damage as possible to the enemies command, control and communications structure. This means assassinating officers, sabotaging communications and destroying logistical links. To this purpose, Spetsnaz troops are schooled in the languages of their enemies, and required to be fluent with language of the target country. This specialization caused great concern for NATO commanders during the days of the Cold War: Who could you trust if any soldier might be a Spetsnaz infiltrator?
During the early days of the Post-Soviet Breakup, the Spetsnaz forces often found themselves assigned to peacekeeping duties in the areas of Russia rife with ethnic conflict. Even though Post-Soviet Russian military suffered serious budget cuts, Spetsnaz troops were more or less immune to this new policy: They were considered simply too valuable to give up.
In 2010, GRU lost control of the Spetsnaz troops but the decision was reversed in 2013.
Overview[]
Unlike their "siblings", the Spetnaz, these units are armed with a decent RPG and a marksman rifle. Altough they might lose a one on one engagement against special forces in close quarters, their marskman rifle is a game changer when engaging from distance. Ideally they should be paired with Spetnaz in order to complement each other's weakness and make a formidable raiding force.
