F-104 Starfighter | CF-104 |
The F-104G Starfighter is a ground attack aircraft available to Denmark and NATO-allied decks.
History[]
The Lockheed F-104 Starfighter is a single-engine, single-seat, T-Tail supersonic fighter. It was the first fighter to use the General Electric M61A1 Gatling-style Vulcan Cannon. First flown 4 March 1954 and introduced to American arsenals in 1958, the Starfighter was highly exported to NATO nations. The F-104G was manufactured under license by several nations including Canadair, Messerschmitt, Dornier, Fiat, Fokker, and SABCA. It featured a strengthened fuselage, wing structure, landing gear, increased internal fuel capacity, a larger ventral fin, and revised flaps for better maneuverability.
In Danish service, the F-104G was used both by Royal Danish Air Force. First received from the United States between 1964 and 1965 under the Mutual Defense Assistance Act, the Royal Danish Air Force also received the CF-104 and CF-104D from Canada in between 1971 and 1973, and the RDAF operated 51 Starfighters until the 1980's. These were used by Eskadrille 726 and Eskadrille 723.
Overview[]
AirLand Battle[]
The Starfighter is a light strike platform available to Danish and NATO decks. It carries an internal 20mm M61A1 Vulcan cannon and four BL-755 high-explosive anti-tank cluster bombs. The type is good for attacking armored columns. The Starfighter carries no air to air missiles, though its Vulcan cannon allows the type to defend itself against enemy aircraft, to attack helicopters, or to strafe ground targets. Its lack of ECM makes the type vulnerable to long range SAMs and AAMs, however, and a fighter escort should be considered if the Starfighter is striking targets within enemy-controlled territory.
Red Dragon[]
The Starfighter in Wargame: Red Dragon is a light strike platform available to Danish and BLUFOR decks. It now carries four Mk 77 Napalm bombs in place of the BL-755 anti-tank cluster bombs, leaving the anti-tank role to the precision-strike F-16A MLU. The Starfighter is best used for area denial operations and to burn enemy tanks and infantry out of cover. The type still carries no air to air missiles or ECM, and a fighter escort should be considered if the Starfighter is striking targets within enemy-controlled territory.
