Su-27S | Su-27M | Su-27K | Su-27PU |
The Sukhoi Su-27PU (later called Su-30) is a prototype interceptor for the Soviet Union that first appeared in Wargame: Red Dragon.
History[]
The Sukhoi Su-27PU/Su-30 (NATO reporting name Flanker-C) is an improved variant of the Su-27. It is a twin-engine, two-tail, two-seat multi-role fighter. First flown in 1989 and introduced to Russian arsenals in 1996, Sukhoi began developing the PU variant of the Su-27 after the Soviet PVO issued requirements for improved range to the baseline Su-27 to cover the large expanse of Soviet airspace. The Su-27PU was developed out of the two-seat Su-27UB trainer, providing a two-man crew for long missions, and saw the installation of an in-flight refueling probe to extend range. The Su-27PU became the basis for several variants of the Su-30, and was exported to a variety of countries.
Overview[]
The Su-27PU is an advanced air superiority fighter available to Soviet decks. Its most comparable NATO equivalent is the French Rafale F1 . Carrying exceptional ECM, four short-range R-73A and six long-range R-77 fire-and-forget air to air missiles, and an internal 30mm GSh-301 cannon, the Su-27PU is an incredibly powerful aircraft, able to perform any aspect of the air superiority mission. It can effectively attack helicopters, engage enemy fighters, or be used as an interceptor, with its high speed and six long-range R-77 missiles. The chief drawback of the Su-27PU is its cost. Although it can go toe-to-toe with any NATO fighter, it is vulnerable to swarming by several less expensive fighters, and at 180 points per aircraft, is well worth the risk.
