The Su-27S is an Air Superiority Fighter for the Soviet Union that was introduced in Wargame: AirLand Battle.
History[]
The Su-27S (NATO reporting name: FLANKER-B) was developed after the Soviet Union learned of the American "Fighter-Experimental" program in 1969. It became clear to the Soviet leadership that the newly developed fighter (to become the F-15 Eagle) would provide a significant technological edge over the current-generation Soviet fighters. Not unlike the USAF F-X/LWF and USN VF-X/VFAX programs in America, the Soviet Union wound up with two different fighters in development, the PFI ("Advanced Frontline Fighter") and TPFI (Lightweight Advanced Frontline Fighter). The former was developed into the Su-27, the latter into the MiG-29 (NATO reporting name: FULCRUM).
The Su-27S is a twin-engine, twin-tail, single seat fighter, which entered service with the Soviet Air Force in 1985. Representing a doctrinal shift to quality over quantity, the SU-27 carries a long-range "look-down/shoot-down " Pulse-Doppler radar, Infrared Search and Track (IRST) sensor in the nose, provisions for up to 10 air to air missiles, and an internal GSh-301 cannon.

AirLand Battle[]
The Su-27S is a fairly expensive Air Superiority fighter for Warsaw Pact decks, which provides an air to air capability comparable to the NATO F-15C Eagle. It has good ECM, ten missiles, and an internal 30mm cannon. Four of its missiles are the long-range, highly accurate R-27R Vympel, which out-range both the NATO Sparrow and AMRAAM. The remaining six missiles are shorter-range R-73A, directly comparable to the NATO AIM-9M Sidewinder in terms of accuracy and destructive power.
The Su-27S's chief drawbacks are its high cost, and lack of a long-range fire-and-forget missile. Although the R-27R does grant the -27 first shot against almost every other NATO fighter, the aircraft must continue prosecuting its target until the missile hits, making the aircraft more liable to fly over enemy Integrated Air Defense Zones, and to potentially take return fire from its target.
Red Dragon[]
The Su-27S is largely untouched for Wargame: Red Dragon. It has received a slight bump up in ECM (40%), and still carries the same three weapons: an internal GSh-301 cannon, R-27R Vympel long-range semi-active missiles and R-73A Vympel short-range fire and forget missiles. The key difference is that two of the R-73A short range missiles have been removed, leaving the Su-27S with eight missiles instead of ten. The cost per aircraft has also dropped to 150 from 170. The Su-27S's strengths and weaknesses are largely the same in Red Dragon as in AirLand Battle.
