The T-62MV-1 is one of the many main battle tanks in use by the Soviet Union in the Wargame series. It was first referred as T-62M-V when it was introduced in Wargame: European Escalation, and was renamed and upgraded in Wargame: AirLand Battle.

History[]

The T-62MV introduced in 1985 represents the T-62s fitted with "Kontakt-1" explosive reactive armour on the sides of the hull, the glacis plate, and in the front of the turret (where it replaces the BDD "brow" appliqué armour mounted on T-62M, but not presented in-game), as the "V" stands for vzryvnoi – "explosive".

The T-62MV-1 represents the T-62MVs fitted with the V-46–5M diesel engine, replacing the original V-55U. Notice that the year of T-62MV-1 in AirLand Battle was dated 1985, and was changed to 1989 in Red Dragon. However, the in-game model still missed the laser rangefinder over the main gun.

In 1982, Israel invaded Lebanon. During the combat, Soviet military observers showed a strong interest in the Blazer explosive reactive armor installed on Israeli M48 and M60 tanks (Mag'ach 6). Soon, an M48 tank equipped with ERA captured by Syrian army was sent to Moscow for evaluation. The Soviet tank technology experts who saw the tank were both amused and puzzled, since the Institute of Iron and Steel Science (NII Stali) had already recommended ERA to the Soviet armed forces as early as 1949. After repeated testing and research in the 1950s-60s, the Soviet ERA could actually be put into use in the early 1970s, but due to the Soviet military's own conservatism, it was not widely promoted and applied.

Therefore, the NII Stali, together with other research institutes, found the technical components that had been put on hold and developed the first generation of ERA for the Soviet Union in less than a year. The Soviets referred to the reactive armor as Komplekt Dopolnitelnoy Zaschiti, while the first generation of KDZ was called "Kontakt-1". In 1982, the Soviet Union first carried out large-scale installation on the T-55, leading to T-55AMV, while the T-62 with Kontakt-1 entered service in 1985.
