The T-72M2 Moderna (Slovak: Modernization) is a main battle tank prototype for Czechoslovakia that was introduced in The Millionth Mile DLC for Wargame: Red Dragon.
History[]
The T-72M2 Moderna is a Slovakian modernization of the Czechoslovak T-72M1 main battle tank, developed since 1995. It adds DYNAS reactive armor, improved 2A46MS 125mm smoothbore cannon, tweaked S21U engine and a 30mm 2A42 cannon replacing the NSVT machine gun.
The unit itself is a "what-if" idea, since Moderna was designed by Slovakia after Cold War, but still belongs to CSSR in-game. However, in 1989, CSSR did propose an upgrade project for T-72M1 in order to rid T-72S, which was known as T-72M1E. Army of Czech Republic haven't used the T-72M2. Instead, they started to modify their tanks into the T-72M4CZ.[1]
The main shortcomings of the T-72M2 Moderna in-game are Accuracy and Stabilizers (55%/45%). However, while installing certain Western equipment, it is somewhat ironic that the TIGS FCS that Moderna uses has been purchased in a certain quantity by Yugoslavia and used for EFCS-3 on the M-84A, which has a top precision of 65%/60%.[2]
Overview[]
With an immensely hard-hitting main gun and thick armour easily on-par with the best Western tanks, the Moderna is easily the mightiest brawler available to the Warsaw Pact - when the Soviet Union isn't available to help the kids out of a pickle. Even then, the Moderna is easily on-par with the Soviet T-80UM, although it lacks a gun-launched ATGM. What the Czechoslovak brute does bring to the table, unique to any PACT main battle tank, is a top-mounted autocannon. This cannon allows the Moderna to eat through unarmoured and lightly-armoured targets while saving the 125mm piece for NATO's heavier units, though one would be wise to keep an eye on its ammo counter.
Left untouched by the usual foes of tanks, the Moderna will squash mid-to-high end heavy tanks like pathetic insects, and can even go toe-to-toe with other superheavies - its performance will be better than two Eastern Bloc counterparts, the KPz T-72S and the PT-91 Twardy. Where the Moderna tends to fall down, however, is hit probability: its base to-hit chance for its main gun is 55%, which is even less accurate than the M1A2 Abrams' stabiliser. It is also incapable of penetrating the Challenger 2's frontal armour. While the Moderna is powerful, don't expect them to tackle NATO's finest tanks head-on without ample support, lest you find these expensive beasts brought to heel in short order.
As mentioned above, the Polish PT-91 Twardy can be an alternate option for T-72M2 Moderna, it has a better FCS but little weaker armor.
