The T-72M2 Wilk (Polish: Wolf) was a prototype Polish Main Battle Tank that appears in Wargame: Red Dragon.

History[]

Up until the early 1980s, the Polish People's Armed forces, much like their fellow non-Soviet Warsaw Pact allies such as the DDR and CSSR, were restricted to the T-55A tank as their primary MBT in armored units. T-72M2 Wilk was a prototype upgrade program for T-72M1 (export version of T-72A) due to Western M1 Abrams and Leopard 2 started, and it was not until that point that the Soviet Union saw fit to grant the use of newer designs to their allies.

Poland launched domestic production of the T-72M variant (that best be described as a middle ground between the original T-72 Ural and the T-72A) in 1981. A few years later, in 1986, the production of this tank was replaced by a much-improved T-72M1 that for all intents and purposes was almost a complete copy of the original T-72A. However, even as the production began, the T-72M1 was no longer considered by Polish general staff as a sufficient vehicle for the modern battlefield, especially considering the introduction of the next generation MBTs by the western powers. Emboldened by the successes of the indigenous T-55 upgrade program (AM Merida), Poland began to explore various options regarding how to upgrade the T-72M1 on its own.

Three MBT prototypes were built between 1987 and 1990 as a part of the WILK program, featuring the Polish DRAWA FCS, Polish ERAWA-1 ERA kit (also domestically developed), SSC OBRA-1 laser warning system, 850hp S-12U diesel engine (developed from the Soviet V-46-6 diesel) and new smoke grenade launchers. In July 1991, following successful trials, it was nevertheless decided to conclude the WILK project. The lessons learned from this upgrade program lead to the PT-91 Twardy.

Overview[]

Since Poland has joined two coalitions, the Eastern Bloc and Baltic Front, T-72M2 Wilk will have two same-cost peers, namely KPz T-72S1 and T-72M1PÄIV (that is a special purpose "glass cannon" type unit) .

The stats of M2 Wilk and T-72S1 are highly similar, while the latter is a 5 point cheaper T-72S without ATGM. M2 Wilk has 5% higher Accuracy, 1 RPM higher RoF, 1 higher Side Armor (9), but 10 KPH lower speed (60) and 1 less Front Armor (17). Thus the overall performance tends to be more defensive.
