The T-80UM is a prototype Soviet Main Battle Tank that appears in Wargame: Red Dragon.
Overview and tactics[]
The T-80UM is one of the two Soviet superheavy tanks, the other being the T-72BU. Compared to the T-72BU, the T-80UM has slightly inferior armour and worse autonomy, but a better stabiliser for its main gun, a much better GLATGM, superior offroad speed and more ammunition for its machine gun, all for five command points less. In essence, these differences spell out the following: the T-80UM excels at dealing damage, compared to the superior brawling capabilities of the T-72BU. For example, the 3 Top Armor makes T-80UM vulnerable to NATO planes (e.g. F-117).
A Soviet armoured commander should keep the T-80UM in reserve mainly for fending off other heavy and superheavy tanks. The Invar missile is one of the few weapons available to a tank that can reliably punch through the Challenger 2's beefy front armour, and the exceptional range - comparable to a Hellfire missile - ensures that the T-80UM always gets the first shot off. The other key advantage that the T-80UM has over NATO's superheavies is size: it is physically smaller, while NATO tanks have a larger profile, thus easier to hit. When trained to Elite rank (conferring a whopping 92% base accuracy for the Invar), the T-80UM almost always hits its mark in the open field. By the time the enemy tank gets into gun range, it has already taken a beating, giving the T-80UM a big advantage.
The T-80UM's key weaknesses come from the lack of ammo for its missiles (true of all ATGM-armed REDFOR tanks) and, compared to other superheavies, its paper-thin front armour. In a gun-on-gun fight, even a K1A1 can do heavy damage to a T-80UM, and when going up against numbers, the T-80UM usually loses. These weaknesses help to emphasise the importance of combined arms in battle. A T-80UM works best in a Soviet armoured assault group comprising other tanks, plus a Biryusa or two for anti-air defence and a BMPT to ward off infantry. In such a wrecking-ball formation, the T-80UM is used to engage other superheavy tanks; played competently, this wrecking-ball formation is nearly unstoppable.
