TOPAS | TOPAS-2A | TOPAS-2AP |
The OT-62 TOPAS is a Polish Armored Personel Carrier that was first introduced in Wargame: European Escalation. The unit was later simply referred as TOPAS in Wargame: AirLand Battle.
History[]
During late 1950s, Czechoslovakia bought the BTR-50 license from the Soviet Union. These were improved over the BTR-50s with side entry ways along with two rectangular roof hatches. In the earily 1960s, OT-62 TOPAS entered service in Czechoslovak army and the Ludowe Wojsko Polskie (LWP). These vehicles were exported to Bulgaria, Angola, Egypt, India, Iran, Iraq, Libya, Morocco, Sudan and Syria.
These were used in the tracked Mechanized Regiments before being replaced by BWP-1 first in the Armored Division, then Mechanized Infantry Division, along with the Maines of the 7th Lusatian Landing Division/7th Łużycka Coastal Defence Brigade.
OT-62 TOPAS along with the BTR-50 predeccessors served in the Six-Day War in service of Egypt and Syria. Some were captured and put into service by Israel Defense Forces. OT-62 TOPAS served on both sides during War of Attrition and Yom Kippur War. In Iraq service OT-62 TOPAS served in the First Persian Gulf War and 2003 Invasion of Iraq.
Overview[]
Although TOPAS has historically been an improved model of the BTR-50, this advantage is not particularly evident in-game: it is only reflected in faster Speed (45 vs 60 km/h). On the contrary, due to the use of smaller-caliber 7.62mm PKT, TOPAS has weaker firepower compared to BTR-50 using 12.7mm NSVT.
