The VAB, Véhicule de l'Avant Blindé (Armored Forward Vehicle) is an APC still in use amongst the French Forces. Amphibious, it is the chassis of an impressive amount of variants, including command posts, reconnaissance, artillery spotting, tank hunter, and electronic warfare. Fast and cheap, the VAB is to be used on secured roads to bring troops to the frontlines as soon as possible, but lacks interest after unloading its troops.

Available to NATO forces, the VAB also exists as VAB PC (PC for Command Post) and VAB Mephisto, a tank hunter.

The VAB's main characteristics are:

  • High speed. It is the third fastest APC in the game, behind the German TPz Fuchs and British FV103 Spartan.
  • Excellent operational range with extremely low fuel consumption.
  • Cheap price.

Used with the French infantry only, the VAB is used when you need to bring troops somewhere fast. It's average HMG will bring additional anti-infantry firepower to the infantry group it is carrying and damaging helicopters flying by.

History[]

France had a requirement for a amphibious wheeled APC to transport troops from Eastern France to Germany. Panhard and Saviem/Renault created a APC for the France requirement with Renault APC became the VAB chosen in 1974 with production starting in 1976.

VAB equipped Motorized Infantry Regiments which served in Infantry and light armored divisions which had four companies mounted in VAB. The Armored Division along with French Forces in Berlin had a mixed infantry regiment equipped with two companies mounted in VAB along with the other company mounted in trucks.

3 to four VAB served in the protection platoon or Les Pelotons d'Appui Direct Direct Support Platoon of the tank squadron carrying dismounts to support the tanks.
