The Yakovlev Yak-141 is a prototype Naval fighter for the Soviet Union that first appeared in Wargame: Red Dragon.

History[]

The Yakovlev Yak-141 was a prototype single-engine, single-seat, supersonic Naval air superiority fighter developed for the Soviet, then Russian Navy. Development of a replacement for the Yak-38 began in 1975, with a focus for the planned aircraft to be a maritime air superiority fighter. The aircraft, initially called Yak-41M, was first flown conventionally in 1987 (it was designed with Vertical Takeoff and Landing, or "VTOL" capabilities), and the type's first vertical flight took place two years later. The Yak-141 was developed through 1991, but was cancelled that year due to lack of funding.

Overview[]

The Yakovlev Yak-141 is a prototype air superiority fighter available to Soviet decks. It carries a GSh-301 cannon, two short-range fire-and-forget R-73A Vympel and two long-range fire-and-forget R-77 Vympel missiles. Combined with its good ECM (40%), Exceptional air detection, this loadout makes the Yak-141 dangerous to both fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters, and at a not too expensive price. The chief drawback of the Yak-141 is its small missile compliment and rather large turn circle (400) for a air superiority fighter. Although each missile has good accuracy and power, the Yak-141 only carries two of each, making sustained aerial combat difficult. It is otherwise an excellent air superiority option for less cost than a Flanker-series aircraft.
